I have post-processed some of those manuals to split the colours into
layers, convert them to 1bpp and reassemble. This can make a spectacular
difference to file size.
For example, the original colour scan of AA-5286G-TC was 117 MiB. By
splitting the black and red into layers, the size has come down to 7.9 MiB.
I perform the image processing with a netpbm chain, and then assemble
the PDF with a Perl script, using PDF::API2.
