Take a look at the TSS/8 manuals on bitsavers:

http://bitsavers.org/pdf/dec/pdp8/tss8/

The Managers and Users Guide provide lots of info on hardware requirements. 
TSS will run on 8/I/L/E with the appropriate options. I've run it on a 
PDP-8/I and may be running it on my 8/E at some point.
