I once set out to find one of those (that wasn't too far from where I lived
at the time).  The dead giveaway (this was a Rand McNally map) was that the
town/settlement wasn't included in the population table.  

Nothing, not even a wide spot in the road.  To R-McN's credit, they do put
these things where they won't create problems.  Adding a town or geographic
feature to North Dakota isn't going to bother a lot of folks.
