Silver, or silver compounds? I thought it was a photographic process, 
using a 1-line CRT to expose the photographic paper.

Indeeed. Thermal printers aren't too bad, since thermal fax paper 
normally works (it certainly works in the HP9866). Well, unless it's an 
HP7245 which used special sproketed thermal paper which seems to be 
unobtainium...
