Somewhat OT: Wireless MIDI

I haven't seen anything out there,  but since the interface is to optical-type 
parts anyhow,  would it be reasonable to use IR LEDs and such like you'd use 
for a remote control?

I guess directionality and distance would be the determining factors there.
