Doesn't the space shuttle use a system of radiation -hardened 486's? As I
understand it, there are eleven independent systems, and they all must agree
on the outcome of a particular operation for it to go through. If one is
giving a different output than the others, it is taken offline.
"I've just picked up a fault in the AE35 unit. It's going to go 100% failure
in 72 hours." Heh.
