There was an article on this subject in "Invention and Technology" 
magazine some years ago.  Few know that the basic mechanism for the 
Enigma was invented by an American and unsuccessfully peddled to the 
US Navy, who couldn't conceive of a need for such a thing.  Great 
minds at work...
