It seems that you could take a fork of NetBSD 1.x and have something useful 
to build on.

Old GCC (1.x or 2.x)?  Not a not-pig, but compared to 3.x or 4.x, it's 
lightweight.  Couldn't you build NetBSD 1.6 with 2.95.3?
