Me I prefer anything small and MC (midnite commander) as a UI on 'nix.
and Norton Commander for dos. 

Then again I do a very custom W98se using 98lite for the same reason.
Lighter is better.

I'd love to find a 'nix (other than 2.x or V5/6/7) for the PDP-11
that has a small core and networking.
