The trick is to charge for service, not for a license.

I'm only interested in open software, not free software.  I'm happy
to pay for open software.  That way I can fix it when it's broken or
breaks.

I make a lot of money every year on linux, but I do it by
offering a service, not by locking up the rights to my code.

RMS's idea is about access to the source code.
