Very true, Poland used SECAM until sometime in the 90's I believe when they 
switched to some variant of PAL (I haven't been over there since 1985 so I 
don't know the exact details).

I believe it was developed, at least in part, to overcome some of the 
problems with PAL (whatever they are/were)?
