Although there is little online about the earlt Ampex drives because they were goverment only.

The following id from the Ampex timeline:

1950  Ampex introduces the first "dedicated" instrumentation recorder, Model 500, built for the U.S. Navy.

1954 Ampex introduces the first multi-track audio recorder derived from multi-track data recording 
technology.
