I didn't like that either.  But, I have my own ideas about how it should
be cast:
Ed O'Neil as Arthur Dent
Howard Stern as Zaphod
Roseanne as the Vogon captain
Jaqueline Pearce (Servilan on Blake's 7) as Trillian
Christopher Lloyd as Slartibartfast, . . .

And I see Marvin as much more like Bender than like the Disney cute one.
