airport x-ray machines: can they damage 8" floppies?

I flew from Chicago with a couple 1/2" reel tapes this summer and just
asked that they not be x-rayed. The TSA attendant called their
supervisor who did a physical examination, swabbed them, and I was good
to go. Of course YMMV.
