Well, in MY day, we BUILT a simple 68K computer from scratch in our
class, from "kits" supplied by Motorola.

I had the foresight to buy a couple of tubes of 68000s at a hamfest
for a couple of bucks. By the end of the semester, I had sold every
one of them...
