Ah, the Vise-grip C-clamp.  There's also a Pony clamp that's a work-
alike.  If you wanted to go a notch up, I recall seeing this thing at 
my favorite Cheap Chinese Tool Store:

With some modification, that'd work pretty well, it seems to me.  
Might be useful for other things as well, depending on your 
inclinations.  Make one heckuva walnut cracker...
