That's not really a spline-head.  It's triple-square.  The cut angles 
are 90-degrees.  They're all over the place on my Audi.  They use them, 
not to make them difficult to remove by non-VAG personnel, but because 
they are capable of taking a truly enormous amount of torque before 
camming out.  Makes them great for suspension and brake parts.  You can 
get a set of sockets for them for about $10.
