The CDC opersting sytems (NOS, SCOPE, KRONOS, etc.) used to punch 
"banner" cards in column binary so I/O clerks could pair up decks 
with other job output.

But a card with all columns punched is like a wet noodle.  Very 
flimsy--good for jamming card readers.
