I vaguely recall some TV drama from the 1980s that took place sometime in
"the future" that had a scene showing something like this. The main
characters were walking through a TV department. Someone put a
thumb-sized faceted crystal into a gizmo that resembled a VCR which took
it in and shone a laser on it.
