The Apple II series had a weird way of doing joysticks. The most common
seemed to be the 9-pin female port. For some strange reason a lot of
joysticks had a pigtail sticking out of the d-sub housing that plugged
into a DIP socket. Last time I checked, all Apple II machines had a DIP
socket for joystick/paddles.
