Of course not.  But try submitting a $1 bid at a sealed bid auction for an
item you'd be willing to pay $1000 for.  Typically that's not a good tactic.

Ebay is somewhere in between a sealed bid auction and an open bid auction.
The only way to find out what someone has bid is to submit a higher bid.
