Byte was sold by McGraw-Hill to CMP Media, which was subsequently bought by United Business Media.  For a while, it operated as a web-based publication at www.byte.com.  That now redirects to www.drdobbs.com, what's left of another storied dead-tree computer rag.  Presumably, UBM owns the rights to the 80's-era back-issues, though I suppose it's possible they stayed with McGraw-Hill.
