Sorry for top-posting but having read this thread I feel you are 
discriminating for no real reason.

Certainly, if the registry is a plain old text file with one 
maintainer then some limitations is probably good.

But with an rdbms and a nice front then it could encompass all 
makes and models.

Some filtering on the output and bobs your uncle.
