In retrospect, this was me being careless about sizes.  I was confusing
3½"-vs-5¼" (floppy size) with 4"-vs-5¾" (drive mounting widths).  I did
look for an indication of what kind of drive it was (floppy, fixed
disk, CD, etc) but, because I'd (mis)read the 5¼" as indicating drive
width, failed to notice that that size alone pegged it as a floppy.

Mea culpa.
