I remember reading recently on a Nixie clock web page that 12 shaped
electrodes was about the limit for a nixie (no matter what the shape).
 I'd guess that there a) wasn't enough depth, and b) too much blockage
of the rear-most electrodes to be useful and/or c) not enough pins in
the base.

I'm not saying that nobody made hex nixies, but I think they were rare
even back in the day.
