I have an E-mu ESI-4000 sampler that will not work with SCSI at all
unless the "free" end of the SCSI chain is unterminated. I thought it
might be something that needed a short cable, but it's happy with 50-pin
SCSI ribbon cables over 6 feet long!

SCSI is voodoo. SCSI as implemented by musical equipment manufacturers
I can't even begin to describe.
