Interesting, all of the magazine articles I remember reading in the mid-80's 
(and indeed our lecturer on "Human-Computer Interfaces" at Polytechnic) used 
the definition of "WIMP" I gave above.

This was in the days of GEM, MAC "Finder", Amiga "Workbench" etc.

Just had a quick look on Wikipedia, 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WIMP_%28computing%29, and it seems that both 
definitions are equally valid. Learn something new every day. :-)
