Not sure about that, but the first Matrix film "bullet time" effects was 
done on FreeBSD and a PC renderfarm.

The third Matrix film used ridiculous amounts of cash with third-party 
effects houses, some of which were put out of business by the endeavor 
(not sure how that works).
