I still favor character graphics, but everything in drawn in bitmap today.
Weird OS design/display 640x400 --- for a 18 bit machine?
layer 1) OS menu - cell graphics.
layer 2) Text display - cell graphics.
layer 3) Bit mapped display - 512 color - 9 bits?
			      256 fixed colors?
