FWIW, I havea 3rd party Cumana hard disk for the TRS80 Model 3/4. It
contains 4 sections :

A PSU (+5V, +12V)
A standard ST412-interface hard disk. I forget the model
A Western Digital controlelr card. I am not sure of the exact model, but
it's very simialr to a WD1001, and may be that one.
A Cumana-designed interface to the TRS-80. Just an address decoder.

The WD board has been modified by the addition of a jumper wire to bring
5V ot a normally N/C pin on the host conenctor. That's used to power the
address decoder board. AFAIK the firmware ROMs on that board (there's an
8X300-seires microcontrolelr there) are stnadard.

This think uses the standard Radio Shack drivers, etc.
