I'm really surprised at that.  Might it be as easy as some signal
conditioning?  Use an LM1881 to separate the sync, and then put it
back together a bit cleaner?

There are a lot of Exatron commercial quality units out there as well,
but a lot of them don't quite do what you anticipate they might.  Be
sure to download a manual before bidding.
