SGI ceased to be relavent when they stoped producing MIPS-based
workstations.  Had they ported IRIX to Itanium, they would have been able to
differentiate themselves from the rest of the marketplace.  Of course
we've seen how well that is working for Sun. :-(

I was really saddened when I read that recently, but not surprised.

Suddenly the UNIX market seems really small.  You have AIX from IBM, HP-UX
from HP, Mac OS X from Apple, and Linux on just about everything.  The OS
market as a whole isn't *THAT* much larger, except for either serious niche
OS's or legacy OS's.  :-(
