What is it with the 2114? I've replaced them in devices from many 
manufacturers, using ICs from many manufacturers, and of different ages. 
Some plastic DIP, some ceramic. Why is this chip so darn unreliable? 

I could accept that one batch from one manufacturer could have problems, 
but there seems to be nothing in common between the ones I've had to change
