   Many have said good things about AVR...including a few people  
whose opinions I value, now including you.  I plan to check it out  
someday.  For now, my "tiny" projects use PIC, my "small/medium"  
projects use various 8051 implementations, and my "big" projects use  
ARM.  I will add AVR to that list when I have some time to check it out.
