Depends on the program. I've only ever done this with an internal FDC
drive but I don't see a reason why an external USB wouldn't work.

Not the (more) current MFM disks. The original GCR disks above do indeed
use a variable speed system and cannot be written by conventional PC drives.
However, the later MFM disks and "SuperDrives" (not to be confused with
Apple's contemporary use of the term) are bog standard except for the HFS.
