Thining of edge-punched cards... The original membership cards for the Cambridge University Computer Preservation Society had 8-level paper-tape punchings along the bottom edge giving (IIRC) 'CUCPS' (im ASCII),. the member's computer userid (ditto) and the membership number (3 bytes, binary). I don;t think anyone ever tried to machine-read them though. -tony
