Preferred way of substituting TFT for CRT Monitor?

The 98549A board is 1024x768, 6 planes (4 color, 2 overlay, at least under HP VUE -- perhaps there's a way it can make use of all 6 planes for color, but I don't know how). Otherwise, that matches what I've observed here.
