All I've read on the conservation threads seems to indicate that the
only protection against degradation is refrigeration under low
temperatures.   It seems that there are unstable bonds in many plastics
that come undone with time.

It's an ugly problem--and I suspect the only solution is to replicate
the parts.  Heaven knows, I've had terrible experiences with PVC and
ABS.  I'm staring at a 9-track streamer drive that's decomposing on its
own in the dark.  Problem is that not only the panel parts are made from
plastic, but so is the main chassis.
