Politics is the only explanation I can offer for the desire to make steel and high energy
(electricity) costs – no coherent strategy for UK PLC.
Although high energy costs does explain the UK’s paucity of primary steel production

Good luck keeping them going with solar and wind. When the electricity stops and the mill
freezes, about all you can do is scrap it and build a new one.
And when the electricity is occasionally working, its price is three times what they pay
in France or Finland.
