So run IRIX :-) I've nothing against Linux, but if you've got an SGI...
My first Indy was a R4600 and I didn't have
IRIX, so I net-installed Linux
on it. It would take 4 hours to complete a kernel build, and it took 11
hours to build X. I gave up on doing the gcc build.
I've got a few Indys (and 3 Indigos, 3 O2s, and an Origin 2000). The
two Indys I use most are now R5000SC powered, and they do OK. One of
them runs 24/7 as a server here. Previously they've been various R4400
and R4600, PC and SC, and it must be admitted that most run Irix 5.3
 better than 6.5.

Nice. I too have an Origin 2000. Two, actually...I managed to get my
hands on the one I signed a purchase order for, shortly after they came out.
Damn near a quarter million dollars. It made one hell of a Usenet feed server.
