I agree these things matter but my position is one of reasoned
dissension,
not an arbitrary personal preference. The point is that the rule
is unnecessary.
There are lots of rules in English grammar/spelling that are
"unnecessary." That doesn't mean I don't cringe when I get a text
message that reads "hey u, wat r u up 2??" Nor does it mean I'm
not going to try to preserve some of these rules... Sure, I know
what the sender means, that doesn't mean I have to like the way it
was said. (Flash forward 50 years to when the English alphabet
only has 12 letters...)
