Early, sure. First, definitely not. There were games just like that, with (more
primitive, admittedly) 3D graphics on PLATO back around 1977.
For that matter, it's interesting that the description mentions Bruce Artwick's
"Flight Simulator" but not the earlier (and arguably direct ancestor)
"airfight" written on PLATO in 1976 by Brand Fortner.
