My experience too. I once had a DEC Logic Lab that was given to me by a
man who held badge #7 at the Mill when DEC was a startup. Donated it to
my college to put in a display case and never saw it again. Same with a
Univac 418 front panel that was from a machine I serviced in my first job!
I also had serial number 000001 of a Radio Shack SX190 and emailed them
in case they wanted it for a corporate history display or something. I
got a reply saying 'sorry, we no longer support that model!" A local
museum gave me a tax receipt for more than I originally paid for it!
I think we live in a world where most people don't care about the past,
just next quarter's profits.
