Hello.
So it is happening. Finally. What a relieve. I am giving away my
(almost) entire classic computer collection. Free of charge (almost).
But local pickup only due to health reasons. Read: Due to a physical
disability I am not able to ship any computers.
Location: Kaiserslautern, Germany.
Almost because I will keep my beloved SPARCstation 1+, my SGI O2 and a
few spare parts for sentimental reasons. I am still tempted to keep a
QBus with a LSI11 and MicroVAX III...
Anything else has to go.
I don't wane make a profit out of it. I want the stuff go into good
hands with absolut minimum effort at my side. As compensation I only ask
for your help to get rid of some other stuff that has accumulated over
the years. (Loads of disk, CDROM and tape drives. Cables, adapters,
expansion cards, RAM modules, ... and some junk in my basement. More
cables, 14" VGA monitor, glass-TTY, 19" rack mounts, empty boxes, ...)
Either you take some of the junk with you, or you help me bring the junk
to the nearby recycling center. I don't care, as long as the junk is
gone. I may also request your help to rearrange existing or install new
furniture in my appartement. (My desk uses the Sun 3/260 as support...)
You want it all? Perfect. Rent a moving truck. Come and get it. You just
want some pieces? Fine. Come, get what you want and take some junk out
of the pile. The more nice stuff you take, the more junk you have to
take. (Sounds worse then it is.)
Almost complete list of stuff available below. Almost all stuff can be
picked up and transported by a singe, strong person. Only a few pieces
will require an additional hand, that I can not provide my self due to
health reasons. Contact me off list with your machines of interest to
get things arranged.
Rationale:
I haven't done anything with this stuff in 15+ years. After 15 years, I
am quite confident that this will not change. I tried to get back into
it in 2010 by acquiring a PDP-11/34A. After a few weeks I lost interest
and now it is sitting partly disassembled and waiting for repairs. (The
PSU bricks need new electrolytic capacitors...) Sitting there for 15
years. Untouched.
I haven't really read any postings to this list in 10+ years. I am
basically only still subscribed to nag myself to write this email.
For me, my machinery is like books that I have read. I had a lot of fun
reading those books. I learned a lot out of them. Most important are the
people that I got to meet via them. Like this very mailing list and the
legendary VAXpower meetings... :-) But now I know all the books. There
is nothing new to discover. The books just sit there on shelves,
collecting dust. It reached a point where all this stuff is getting in
my way to live a happy live. The collection has become an obligation, a
burden. Especially as:
At the end of 2009 my back broke and I needed an emergency surgery. Now
I have to be very careful with lifting and carrying stuff. I don't move
anything over maybe 6 kg anymore. (That is 13ish pounds for you
imperialists. ;-) ) This is also the reason why I can not ship anything.
I am simply not physically able to package the stuff and bring it to the
post office without risking breaking my back again. And when my back
brakes again, I may end up in a wheelchair. I escaped that just barely
when my back broke initially in 2009... Needless to say that this
physical damage also caused mental issues. I will not take any risk
breaking my body again.
Also: I live in an old appartement building. My landlord will renovate
the appartement that I rent in late summer 2026. I may move out of this
appartement into an other one in spring 2026, so that the appartement is
uninhabited during renovation. I will not move all of this stuff to a
new appartement. And if I don't move, I wane get rid of the collection
anyway. It will ease the renovation process a lot. Anything that is not
already gone when the renovation starts, respectively on moving day,
will be recycled. If this means the PDP-11/34A goes into the dumpster to
be shredded, than it will happen.
Machinery:
DEC PDP-11/34A + RK05, optionally in low boy 19" rack.
Shares a RL02 and a Cypher 9-track Pertec tape drive with the 11/73.
Tektronix 4000-something storage tube vector graphics terminal.
I think I still have the accompanying Tek printer.

I pieced this together over time in a BA23 desk side box. Runs 2.11BSD.
Has 4 MB RAM, 2 x MSCP ESDI disks (IIRC 150 MB each), TK50, RL02, SMD
and Pertec adapters. Comes with a 9" 1 GB E-SMD disk. Shares a RL02 and
a Cypher 9-track Pertec tape drive with the 11/34A.

Ich bin platzmäßig etwas beschränkt, bzw. muß wegen
Feuchtigkeitseintritt jetzt dann meinen Keller ausräumen. Daher kann ich

Hello Jochan,
I’m really sorry to hear that you’re having to part with your collection because of health
issues. I truly hope you’re doing better or will be soon. That said, your decision to give
away parts of your collection gives me a rare opportunity to get my hands on a few
computers I’ve always dreamed of owning.
Unfortunately, I live in Poland, and finding old non-PC computer equipment here is usually
close to impossible—we mostly started computerizing in the 1990s with cheap East Asian PC
hardware. Because of that, if you’d be willing to give some of the machines to me, I’d
honestly be happy to drive all the way from Poland to your place and back.
I’m an electronics engineer (still a student), and I’m especially interested in older
systems like your PDP-11/34 with its Tektronix 4010 graphic terminal. I really enjoy
working with machines where you’re close to the bare metal when fixing and using
them—that’s what fascinates me the most. I could also take some newer systems, like a
VAXstation or something from Sun, and donate them to the Museum of Engineering here in
Kraków. Some friends of mine there are starting to organize a new computer history
exhibition beginning next summer.
PS: What’s the best way to contact you? This is honestly my first time using a mailing
list. Someone reposted your message on a computer history Discord, otherwise I probably
wouldn’t have found it.

what an amazing collection, and sorry to hear about your back.
I'm the author of T2 SDE Linux (https://t2linux.com) and try my best to keep all CPU
architectures supported. I would be very happy to pick up a some of the ones I do not have
yet, if possible. The ones that stand out or match the Linux code work I'm doing are:

- SGI Octane,
- SGI Indigo 2 r10k
- DEC VAXstation 4000-90
- HP 9000/750
- Sony NEWS NWS-3410
- IBM P200
I certainly can pick up accessory "e-waste" and if there is lack of interested
other systems, such as the Ultra 1, 2, Mac mini, SS5 or 10. They would all be used for
Linux testing, coding.

Hallo Jochen,
I understand your situation and I hope you will be happy, when you have given the systems
you took care of for so long into good hands.
I will be able to pick up in the first days of the new year and I can help you recycle the
remaining things.
Depending of the situation I‘m interested in some if the following systems to complete my
collection of old Unix hardware:

I lost some of my Sun 3/ and Sun 4/ gear when moving years ago, it would be nice to have a

Some feedback on this to the general public:
First many thanks to the good wishes for my health situation. I think in
the mail it sounds worse than it is. It is not going to get better, but
it is OK. Not fine, but OK. I simply have to be careful to not make it
worse. Carying heavy things is risky and may make things worse. So I
simply don't take the risk. I am 52 years of age and plan to stay here
for at least an other 30 or so years. I would not mind of an other 52
years, albeit that being a bit unrealistic. I hope to spend this time in
good health and have a high quality of live. A bunch of old computers
are not worth to risk anything. Simple, isn't it?
Initially I was anxious that I might not get rid of all the stuff. Ohh,
man. I got overwhelmed by the amount of reactions and offers for help
that arrived by e-mail. Thanks to all who reached out.
On the other side I am now in the conundrum to decide who gets wich
machine. I still have to compile a comprehensive overview who requested
which machine to sort out allocation. Some machines are very popular. I
think 90% of the mails requested the Octane, the Indigo 2 Impact, the
PDP-11/73 and then a bunch of other machines. DEC and Sun is very
popular... I am not surprised by this. Obviously I will not be able to
satisfy all wishes.
Also: I got contacted by the chairman of the VzEkC, "Verein zum Erhalt
klassischer Computer e.V." (Club for Preservation of Classic Computers)
I didn't not know that this existed before. The chairman is actually a
friend from the good old VAXpower / UnixIron times. There was already a
thread going on in there forum about my project. So I registered an
account to participate in the discussion and give first hand input. I
immediately felt at home. I resonate with the vibe there. Even better, I
soon discovered that many friends from the old times are user over there.
The VzEkC offered to me to take all and everything, help cleaning out
the junk, rearrange furniture, ... A dream come true. Especially as I am
overwhelmed handling all the requests myself. The VzEkC will put
everything in temporary storage. Later it will be sorted, cataloged and
then there will be a raffle among VzEkC members. Some things will go
into a public raffle at the Classic Computing 2026 festival

This is the best solution. As said, about 90% of the requests I got was
in the form "I want the SGI Octane, the Indigo 2 Impact, the PDP-11/73
and XYZ" Where XYZ was a bunch oc DEC or Sun stuff. Some single machines
are in so high demand, I could give away a dozen of them and still not
satisfy all requests. So I think a raffle is the most fair solution.
That said: The VzEkC will not get everything. From all the requests that
I got, I will pick a few and try to preallocate machines to some people.
Criteria are:
- People that I already know from the good old times.
- Open Source / Free Software projects.
- Local community.
- Education, public museums and empowering young talent.
For now I can tell that the PDP-11/34A is assigned to an electrical
engineering student from Poland. I got many requests for the /34A. I
know, most of those people would pick up the /34A, shove it into there
storage and let it rot for ever. (As it has been rotting at my
appartement for the past 15 years...) From all requests, he is the singe
and only one that showed the true and genuine interest, motivation,
commitment, knowledge and skill that is required to get this machine
back to live. I am very, very happy to give this machine to him. And I
am in total resonance with him. He is a TTL logic fetishist as I am...
For this reason he will also get the Sun 3/260, as this machine is a TTL
logic fetishist's wet dream come true: About 1,5 m^2 PCB area densely
packed with 74 TTL, DIL RAMs, lots of PALs, some 10k ECL.
The VAXstation 4000-60 and -90 will go to an old friend.
The Sun Ultra 5 and 10 will go to an Open Source project in the
Netherlands. To make there 1000+ km round trip worth the effort I will
add in some nice and beefy machinery on top of the Suns. But I still
have not decided on the add-on.
Arrangements and negotiations are ongoing. I will try to answer every
request. Even if it is only a "sorry, already claimed".

Great to hear! I am still sad about how, when I had to move to a much
smaller place during COVID, none of the museums I contacted could
accept my servers with a somewhat special history, and they went
to private collections that I haven't heard anything from since.
