As a (possibly related) datapoint - the Gould UTX-32 systems at City
University London ~1987 had a "pac" compiler which IIRC compiled
Pascal and Ada to (eye watering) C code, and then compiled that to
PowerNode code.
Unrelated - I remember thinking that the filesystem layout having
space for 64 bit timestamps was quite forward thinking :)
